SOS Campaign

The following campaign was layed out:

October, November and December the committee will be doing the foundation and organization work for the referendum. The following committees have been established:

Idenfication of Yes Voters

  1. Voter Registration — Margie Vaughn
Margie is getting a current updated voter registration list from the 3 counties. We will need 30 people from the three communities to make telephone calls with a script to identify our "yes" voters. We need to get volunteers to commit now. The calling will be done the first two weeks of January or later until we are done. Each volunteer will have approximately 50 names to call. The night before and the day of the election, the callers will be calling to remind the yes voters to vote. If you are interested in doing this job or know of a friend or relative who would be interested, please let me know.
  2. Voter Registrars — Nancy Gibson
We need to get parents and/or teachers in each building to get training as a registrar in each county. Need 6 trained people per building to set up tables at school events to register folks. The Supt and principals will also go through the training so that they can register people on a walk-in basis. This can be done as soon as we get the training. I will contact the clerks to see what is involved and how to go about it. If you would like to help with this let me know.
  3. Poll Watchers — Malinda
We will need 27 people to sit at the polls the day of the election to mark off the names of the voters. There are 9 precincts -- figure 3 per precinct to work the day. They will give us the names of yes voters who have not voted on that day. We will give them a reminder call or ask if they need a ride to the polls.

Neigborhood Coffees — Tori

  1. We are organizing a series of coffees in individual homes during the months of January, February and March. We plan to have 3-4 of these a week. We would like to ask the host or hostess to invite 10 to 15 friends, neighbors and family to discuss the referendum. Teams of two folks will faciliatate the conversation. (might be bd member and committee member, faculty member and committee member, supt and committee member) We would also like to use some of our more articulate high school students to help with this too. We need 40 volunteers to commit now to host the coffees and volunteers to help faciliate the conversations. If you would like to do either of these things, please let us know.
  2. We will need volunteers to bake approximately 80 dozen cookies for the coffees.

Letters To The Editor

We need two kinds of volunteers for this activity.

  1. Five individuals to develop a letter to the editor that someone could use as a model.
  2. 40 individuals who will write letters to the editor during the months of January, February and March. Of special importance will be the last two weeks of the campaign.

Distribute Literature and Signs

We need 20 volunteers to help distribute literature and signs during the first two weeks of March. This would be going door to door to pass out the literature. Students could help with this activity.

Community Rally

We would like to sponsor at least one community rally right before the election. This would involve students, teachers, parents and community members who are in favor of the referendum. A candlelight walk to the square as a symbolic gesture of support is being discussed.

Superintendent and Committee Member Coffees

Dr. Gibson will be meeting with business and community members on an informal basis over a cup of coffee at the local cafes for a short conversation regarding why we need the referendum. She will be doing 3-4 of these a week beginning in October and going right to the wire in March. She hopes to take a board member, committee member or community member with me to help with these conversations.
